Preparing ahead of time for a new school year can help minimize back-to-school anxiety for the whole family. Here are some practical suggestions and helpful resources to make the transition as smooth as possible.

- Start easing kids back into school day bedtime and morning routines a couple of weeks before school starts. Do practice runs for any new routines or schedules.
- Work out transportation such as carpooling, bike routes, or bus schedules before the first day of classes.
- Make sure you have documentation of required vaccinations handy.
- Schedule wellness checks and required sports physicals in advance.
- Take inventory of any unused or reusable supplies still in the backpack from last school year before shopping for supplies.
- Watch for community-based back-to-school events and school supply giveaways.
- Take advantage of new student orientations or school events to get your youth familiar with the school layout before classes start. This can help alleviate common first-day fears.
- Schedule a time with your child’s new teacher to discuss special needs or concerns.
- Invest in a planner or planner app to help keep important reminders and schedules posted.
- Plan outfits the night before, and have a designated spot for shoes and backpacks to avoid morning chaos.
By organizing and preparing in the weeks leading up to it, you can set the tone for a more relaxed and productive school year.
